HECOL 313 Research Paper - "Queer Family Members: Through the Lens of Feminist Theory and Family Systems Theory"
This artefact, my HECOL 313 (Family Dynamics Across the Lifespan) research paper, co-written with my classmate Joy, manifests my mission to support individuals, families, and communities through collaborative learning for holistic well-being and social equity. In this collaborative effort, we explored the complexities of "coming out" within families, marking my first undergraduate paper on the queer community.
Our critical and systems-thinking approaches, informed by feminist and family systems theory, navigated the challenges of addressing "coming out" dynamics with sensitivity. Despite my connection to the queer community, grappling with appropriate language prompted discussions with Joy to ensure cultural competence in our writing (Sweitzer & King, 2019, p. 96).
The project's success, earning us a grade of 100%, significantly deepened my understanding of queer family dynamics and the intricacies of "coming out." It emphasized the importance of respectful language and cultural competence, aligning directly with my healthcare aspirations. This newfound awareness propels me toward a commitment to developing equitable communities. The shifts in family dynamics discussed in the paper underscore the need for inclusive environments and inspire broader societal contributions.
Acknowledging the challenges encountered by queer individuals within Western family settings, I aspire to cultivate environments that celebrate diversity, dismantle biases, and champion equity. The research paper instills a profound sense of responsibility, propelling me to contribute to sustainable efforts beyond mere awareness. This involves advocating for policy changes and community programs, aligning with my health promotion or policy analysis career aspirations. Through these endeavours, I aim to actively contribute toward fostering more significant equity and inclusivity within societal frameworks.
