Research Assistant for the Regional Centre for Healthy Aging (RCHA) Project at Sage Seniors Association
I was a research assistant (from January to March 2024) for the Northern Alberta Regional Centre for Healthy Aging (NARCHA or RCHA) project associated with Sage Seniors Association in Edmonton. Sage's mission is "we want every Edmonton senior to live a full and heathy life, to do as much as they can, as well as they can, for as long as they can" (Sage Seniors Association, n.d.).
In my role, I created promotional materials for various community health fairs, and attended these events to highlight the Healthy Aging Portal and Healthy Aging Assessments being developed by the RCHA. Through the Canadian Frailty Network's Healthy Aging Portal – an online platform with information, tools, and resources – older adults can complete healthy aging assessments at their own pace, or with assistance if requested. These tools help older adults identify areas to strengthen their independence and receive resources and interventions tailored to their specific needs. I learned about the World Health Organization's Determinants of Healthy Aging, and what supports and resources are available for aging individuals to build resilience and well-being across their life. I also follow up with older adults and provide support in navigating the portal and/or these assessments. Through my calls and e-mails with these older adults, I learned to be more empathetic and understanding of their differing supports regarding digital literacy.
